Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Do you find yourself checking repeatedly if you have locked doors, turned the taps or the gas off?

Perhaps you feel compelled to tidy and clean your house for hours every day to make sure it is spotless?

Do you feel the need to wash your hands repeatedly even though you know they are clean?

Do you feel you have to execute a certain routine and worry that if you do not do it in exactly the right order that there will be negative consequences?

If you recognise any of these symptoms, you will already know how debilitating living with OCD can be.

The root cause of OCD is usually fear. For example, you may fear that your house will be broken into if you don’t check the back door or you fear that your house will burn down if you haven’t checked the hob.

Many people also find they have an obsessive preoccupation with a thought, urge or image. You may worry excessively that you have caught a terrible disease or that you are dying. Other people may obsess about the way they look and worry about other people noticing. It might be that they worry about having ears that stick out, an unusual nose or the size and shape of their body.

Obsessions and compulsions can be minor or they can be so consuming that they take up much of a person’s waking hours and it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. Overthinking - a common feature with some clients - only serves to perpetuate the issue!

It's not clear exactly what causes OCD, although it is likely to have a genetic basis which is then triggered by a traumatic or emotional event. Some studies have also shown people with OCD have an imbalance of serotonin in their brain.

You may feel reluctant to seek help because you feel ashamed or embarrassed. There is, however, nothing to be ashamed of. Costa understands how you feel and will treat you with the utmost respect and compassion.

The great news is that OCD can respond particularly well to Hypnotherapy.

Not only does Hypnotherapy induce deep states of relaxation which help you to feel less anxious, it also targets the part of your brain which can be gently programmed to “switch off” your obsessions and compulsions.

You will be able to make positive changes to your thought patterns, and in turn to your behaviours.

The result?

Hypnotherapy with Costa will most likely resolve the issues that led to the OCD or you will find that your symptoms will at least be reduced enough that you can enjoy a better quality of life.
